Flying Jenny VI wins Chicago Mac
David and Sandra Askew sailed their J/122 Flying Jenny VI to a first in Class and first in Division in the 333 mile Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac. Congratulations to them and their crew on a remarkable accomplishment in a race that featured everything from power reaching, to drifting, to 25 knots on the nose. They won the Mackinac Cup Division, the big boat division. There were 152 boats in their Division!
Flying Jenny VI has earned the right to fly a broom from her masthead - since arriving on the lakes she not only won the Chicago Mac, but she also won her class in the Great Lakes IRC Championship and won her class in the Bayview Mackinac Race. And to wrap it up she won her class in the Harbor Springs Ugotta Regatta at Little Traverse Bay YC.

Sail for Annapolis Yacht Club
Jonathan Bartlett, Fleet Captain
The Annapolis Yacht Club is invited to a variety of events during the year, from Team Race to Match Race to Fleet Races, for men, women, juniors, seniors and all ages in between! We are building a list of all members, spouses, and kids who would be interested in being considered for these teams. We are often invited to events with specific parameters for the team – one team race event may require that skippers be of a certain age. Another may require that a junior member participate. This is why we want to know if you are interested. Currently, our club has registered for the 2010 NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifier which will be sailed at Harbor Court in September. The top three teams will be invited to sail in the NYYC Invitational Cup in September 2011. Should we be selected, we will need to include one junior under the age of 21 as of September 2011 on our team. So, juniors and kids of members, we need to be aware of your interest. We also need members who have experience or the ability to coach, team support, or have other skills. If you would like to contribute, please let us know how you can help.
Click here to download the Sailing Resume Form and email or fax to Jay Kehoe, jkehoe@annapolisyc.org or Fax 410-267-6153. Then, as we need to form teams, our captains will be able to search for people with the experience or skills needed and contact you

AYC Member, Tucker Thompson recently returned from the island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin after competing in the 30th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Tucker was acting tactician on Igoodia/INTAC, a Jeanneau 52 competing in Spinnaker 4 which had the distinction of posting the most 1st place finishes in the 240 boat regatta. Member Clay Bartel also sailed on Igoodia/INTAC as bowman. The “regatta within the regatta” is the Budget Marine Match Racing Series; Tucker served as main trimmer and tactician for World Class Sailor, Gavin Brady finishing 2nd place to the winner, America's Cup and Olympic Sailor, USVI's Peter Holmberg.

March 2010 - Busy midwinter weekend for Club Members!
Peter McChesney and Shane Zwingelberg, place 9th at the Star Bacardi Cup, probably one of the hardest events to sail well in as it is over a full week in Miami. Normally conditions change rapidly down there so you have to be comfortable sailing in both big wind and light wind; Pete and Shane sailed an almost too consistent series with only two of the 5 race series out of the top 10. Many teams that finished ahead of them all had some really deep races that they were able to discard after the 5th race. Other members sailing the event include US Sailing Team member John Von Schwartz sailing with former World Champion George Szabo placing 14th. At the J-22 midwinters held at Southern Yacht Club, member John Rufus Loe placed 2nd to fellow Annapolitan Greg Fisher. John sailed an amazing regatta in tricky conditions. This is Johns first major regatta in the J-22 and our strong fleet in Annapolis is definitely showing that his sailing here has helped get an edge on his competition.

Big Change to AYC Fall Series Format
BIG CHANGES TO ANNAPOLIS YACHT CLUB FALL SERIES FOR 2010
In 2010 Fall Series will undergo a major change. Although surveys have helped, the changes for 2010 are based more on conversations with sailors and our best guesses at what might better serve the multiplicity of competitor groups.
Distance Race Added to Fall Series
The new format will still provide each competitor with three days of racing in this prime time on the Bay, but with a major difference. The series will start with a distance race for all classes on the first Saturday in October. The distance race will be scored with a 1.5x weighting factor in the series giving boats not optimized for “sausage racing” a better chance in the series. On the second weekend the J/105’s, J/30’s, J/24’s, PHRF B and PHRF C will have two days of drop mark racing. On the third weekend the J/35’s, Beneteau 36.7’s, PHRF A0, PHRF A1 and PHRF A2 will sail drop marks on both days. In addition, the non-spinnaker boats, PHRF N, will be given a start in the distance race on the first weekend. We hope this format will provide some relief to those tired of only doing windward-leeward’s, be more attractive to the traditional racer-cruisers, make it easier for boats coming from outside Annapolis Harbor and make it easier to assemble crew.
Fall Series Format Changes Over the Years
Fall Series has long been one of Annapolis Yacht Club’s signature events. It was established in 1940, 70 years ago. The event began as a series of races run on the first three Sundays in October. It became a CBYRA sanctioned event in 1942. In 1967 the schedule was changed to the Saturday-Sunday format we are all familiar with, two groups of classes, each racing one day each weekend. That format remained unchanged through 2009, 42 years.
Although the Saturday-Sunday schedule remained unchanged for 42 years, the racing format has changed a lot. For years single long races each day were sailed around government marks from the Bay Bridge to West River. These included the excitement of trying to find the “mystery mark”, a spar buoy set just north of Bloody Point. In 1976 P/C Ron Ward, then the AYC Race Committee Chairman, introduced drop mark races to the Fall Series and to the Bay. His experience as navigator for the New York Yacht Club’s America’s Cup race committee provided the impetus – along with the fact that he mentioned the possibility to a local reporter who published it as a fact in the local newspaper, leaving Ron little choice but to deliver. Olympic triangle courses became the standard. Still, long single races were sailed each day with 2 ½ to 3 mile weather legs. In response to the sailors, the event shifted to multiple shorter races, and ultimately almost exclusively to windward-leeward courses. The change for 2010 will add a new dimension with its different skill set required for success and we hope provide some new excitement and fun to a great event.
